Jorge Mario Guzman Olaya

Program and Channel Partner Manager
Smiths Detection

Senior Instructor
British Digital LLC
As documented by Jorge Mario Guzmán Ol aya
I have over 20 years of experience in data management. I first came across Simplilearn’s courses during the pandemic when I wanted to know more about the tech domain and take advantage of the data science boom.
At that time, I was working with Smith’s Detection as a program and channel partner manager. My job was to recruit and maintain relationships with channel partners and to design commercial strategies. While studying channel partners, I handled a lot of data and wanted to find an effective way to streamline my work. Simplilearn’s Big Data Hadoop & Spark Developer online course helped me accomplish that.
Upskilling is Part of Career Growth
I started upskilling myself 11 years ago and have continually applied the new skills and knowledge acquired to the job. I believe upskilling is necessary to thrive and grow in one’s career.
I have taken several other courses with Simplilearn, such as Data Science with Python , Data Science with R , ITIL 4 , Tableau , and Professional Certificate Program in AI and Machine Learning . My LinkedIn profile gets views, and interviewers are impressed with my resume wherever I apply. Six months after completing Simplilearn’s Big Data Hadoop & Spark Developer in October 2021, I started working as a partner manager with Simetrik, a Colombia-based FinTech start-up.
Applying New Skills
I have been able to apply the knowledge I gained from Simplilearn’s Big Data course at my current job. As a partner manager, I help provide my company with the vision to grow outside the commercial space by recruiting partners in Latin America. This recruiting process requires a lot of data analysis, and I have to see how many companies are willing to become partners and review their numbers. Once I finish recruiting, I will be working to grow the partnership, including working on a lot of data.
After I took Simplilearn’s Big Data course, I was able to solve a problem for my previous company. We were unsure how to evaluate the performance of channel partners on a year-on-year basis. We had sales data, but it was not a complete picture of the channel partners’ performance.

Business Data Analyst
Zoee
As documented by Gordana Vujec
Gordana needed to upskill and catch up on technologies and skills she had lost ground with due to health-related issues. She was looking for a means of filling those knowledge gaps, while not having the process negatively impact her work time.
My Background
I’m originally from Croatia but moved to the United States in 2006, where I live in Raleigh, North Carolina, with my husband and one child. I pursued a Master’s degree in Computer Science and Economics. In addition to that, I’m a certified Scrum Master, ECBA, Product Owner, and Agile Coach. Currently, I am working as a Business Analyst at Revarture.
Taking Time to Upskill During Recovery
I was unemployed for some time due to severe health issues, which created a gap in my professional career and made me fall behind. During this time, I was also unemployed. Therefore, I decided to upskill, so I opted for the Professional Certificate Program in Business Analysis from Purdue University and Simplilearn.
I got my first job immediately after the class but stayed there for only two months. Then I looked for another job for two months and got the one I have now. I think it was challenging since I ended up talking to three or four recruiters per week. Despite all these leads, it still took me two months to find this job.
My Simplilearn Training Has Me Moving Towards My Ultimate Goals
The program enhanced my knowledge and skills in the field of Business Analysis. I wasn’t aware of how many certifications are necessary for a Business Analyst. Simplilearn helped me understand the importance of upskilling and certification. The course helped me secure a job as a Business Analyst at Revarture.
My experience with Simplilearn was great. I enjoyed the live classes the most as they were very interactive and could connect personally with the instructors. The arrangement helped me ask questions directly. One of the best things about the course was that I could also record the classes for future reference. Also, the course had a comprehensive curriculum. The projects at the end of the course were quite advantageous and practical, with flexible completion deadlines.

VP Global Finance Technology & Innovation
GOT NEW PROJECTS
As documented by John Scott
I have served as Walmart’s vice president of global finance technology and innovation for nearly five years . When you are in a position to lead engineers and technologists, and you are striving to advance the capabilities of a company or a function, you have to understand what is feasible and possible technically. You have to understand how you can apply that technology practically to achieve the outcomes you seek. I wanted to learn more about what data science can do to accomplish such tasks and better understand the capabilities that exist so that I can apply them in other opportunities. I enrolled in Simplilearn’s Professional Certificate Program In Data Science with Purdue University.
The Importance of Upskilling
Life is a learning journey, and you should always look to learn. Everyone has their learning style, and you must stay plugged into what’s happening in the industry. Upskilling is important so that you can apply current learnings to solve business problems that have existed for years. You will have better solutions that way.
How Upskilling Helps Senior Leadership
As a senior leader, you should know what your weaknesses are, and you should always choose to fill those gaps. Technology has taken a quantum leap in the last five years. There have been many changes, such as the ability to move massive amounts of data, the cloud, sharing computers across different geographies, accessing vast amounts of data, and synthesizing that data into something meaningful quickly. Although you can understand the theoretical component of it at a high level, knowing the actual technology behind it can give you a better framework of what’s possible. Knowing that is what upskilling does for anyone.
Professionals Need to Stay on Top of Change
Yes, the expectation is that we all should seek opportunities to get better. If you are not improving yourself, you fall further and further behind daily. If you are not going forward, everyone else is leaving you behind. It doesn’t necessarily mean you have to take a year-long program, but the dedication to improve and grow in specific areas is important.
Data Science Can Improve Business Insights
If you choose to upskill yourself, you already know that there is some deficit. I admit that I needed to upskill. I am in numerous business meetings where we discuss daily challenges. The challenges today are far more complex and require a significant amount of understanding. You have to know how the manipulation or acquisition of data can be applied to a given process. It can improve insights, get financial results, or help make determinations. I realized that data science is one methodology we can apply. It helped me to have that context and understand the process and steps needed to accomplish those goals.
